Higher Fuel Economy or better safety?

Now that congress has passed the mandate to increase fuel economy in cars. Will we be sacraficing safety in our automobile’s? The only way to make them more efficient is to make more of the car out of light weight materials such as plastics.

20 years ago a minor accident caused very little damage to a car. Now that all bumpers, etc. are made of plastic, even minor wrecks cost several thousand to fix. This has lead to higher injury and death rates.

So are we sacraficing safety for fuel economy?

To your first paragraph, yes. It will be a sacrifice of safety.

However, the cars of today are mostly safer AND more efficient than cars of 10 years ago, or 20.

20 years ago, a minor accident didn’t damage the car, but the occupants were more likely to be injured than they are today. I see customers all the time with cars that were totalled, and they walk away without a scratch.
