New York Times Automobiles

Is this another nail in the coffin of the automobile?
25 New York banned cars from stretches of Broadway between Times Square and Herald Square and made it into a pedestrian plaza.

Will people give up the insane rushing about in cars that has grown over the last 20 years ?
Something has to happen, we can’t keep putting more and more cars on the roads every day without eventual chaos. There was a town in Germany on the news last week that’s run by the Greens, most of it’s roads have been pedestrianised and bikes seem to have taken the place of the car. If a car is needed the citizens can go to the car pool and use one from there, no need to own one. Easier to set up in a small town but it’s a good start. Even where I live, UK, locally more and more roads are being pedestrianised regularly and those that remain are being narrowed in the town.
