History of middle east and oil?

When did the middle east first start understanding and reacting to the troumendous oil reserves under the region and creating millionaires than billionaires from this accident of nature and so on? Was it the invention of the automobile that was the main driver of the world’s initial thirst for oil? Which would mean, i guess the middle east and oil issues started to come to the world stage in the early 20th century? Or was oil in high demand before that?–eg, in the industrial revolution? Were the reserves there some of the first exploited? Or was there a significant time period where other reserves were the main ones and geologists had not yet discovered the oil there?
