automobile diagnostic courses and equipment?

Hi everyone I’m looking for a training program that would teach me the skills i need to do engine diagnostics. I dont have much knowlege about it but my dad tells me its a good field to get into. I cant find anything usefull on the web but What i want to bassicaly do is purchase the diagnostic tools and software to connect them to my laptop and learn how to use it to determine what what is wrong with a car, I will not be repairing it just diagnosing it. Also I’m only interested in equipment for japanese and european cars. So if anyone can help me with ideas on how to get started with this, or references to courses, or even what tools I should get, please inform me that would help me out tremendously.

you will need both a scanner and oscilloscope, as well as a fuel pressure gauge kit(master kit is best), a 10 megaohm digital volt ohm meter, a vacuum gauge and hand held pump, test light, oil pressure gauge, compression gauge and cooling system pressure tester. these are needed to diagnose driveablility problems.(what i do, engine problems)

you maybe asking”Why do I need an oscilloscope?”

the scanner uses the vehicle computer to read the information from the sensors .if the computer is bad, how would you know.it is always good to have a second source of information when in doubt. plus it can show ignition patterns when a scanner cannot.

there are online training programs and cd programs that teach the basics(Mitchell, Chiltonsonline.com & Delphi), but no course or program can teach real world problems, I suggest going to a local general shop and get a job as a lube tech(oil change guy). when you are not busy ask the other techs how they do something or show you how to diagnose a problem.check out your local community college for courses, some maybe sponsered by a dealership that has an appreniceship program.Plus it would be cheaper than those specialized trade schools(I went to) that claim you can get ahead of the curve with their cources.

There is no such thing as a diagnosis only tech. techs general speciallize in a particular area(driveablity,front end,Heat & AC.) but they still have to do their own repairs, this cuts down on cost and accountability.Even the engineers do their own repairs when developing new cars. this gives them a better understanding of how things work and interact with each other.how else do they find out if something is poorly manufactured.
