Automobile Parts Catalog
What do I need to study in order to be an automobile guy?
I have always had a passion for cars. I myself am an amateur racer and am aspiring to do what I love for a living. Whether it be a mechanic, installing performance parts, designing, and the like.
My question is this: What do I need to study in college in order to pursue this? I go to UNR if you wanna take a look at their catalog, you’ll notice they don’t offer a degree in auto-anything… atleast not much.
I am at a loss, this university is the only option for me right now, due to many many issues… is there something i can do? Or should I just give up on this dream and study something else
I assume you re talking about the University of Nevada, Reno?
Mechanical Engineering is the closes that comes anywhere near to Automobile Engineering.
Are you absolutely sure that UNR is the only option for you at the moment? If automobiles are what you re really interested in, I say follow your heart rather than get stuck up in some course you don’t have the interest or the aptitude for.
Have you considered going to community college? Community colleges are where they teach all these technical/vocational courses such as being a technician et all (Basically, the jobs where you have to roll up your sleeves and get dirty). There is one right up there in Reno.
Truckee Meadows Community College offers a two-year Transportation Technologies Associate of Applied Science degrees with an emphasis in Automotive Technology and one-year certificates of achievement for automotive repair technicians of every level, from the general auto maintenance worker to ASEĀ® certified master technicians.

Alternatively, you could do your BS in Mechanical Engineering from UNR and then proceed to do your MS in Mechanical Engineering at the same university. ‘Dynamics of Ground Vehicles’ is one of their areas of research. It does take more time, but you did mention that your options were pretty limited. Perhaps you could even do your Associates degree at TMCC and transfer to UNR for a BS in Mechanical Engineering, which gives you the option of doing an MS later on, perhaps even at another university, with a major in Automobile Engineering / Automotive Technology. I noticed you said UNR was the only option for you right now. Perhaps the present circumstances will change for the better in the future. All the best !
