1. Improve your news writing skills. You can’t just sit in front of your computer and hope that you can swing it. In order to effectively write a compelling newspaper article, you must have great news writing skills. You must know the elements that you can and cannot use; you must understand your audience, and you must have a solid idea on the acceptable writing format. If you haven’t written a news article before, I suggest that you read newspapers as often as you can. Observe how these particular articles are written. It will also help if you read books and online resources about journalism.

2. When selecting the stories that you’re going to cover, it’s important that you choose those that are newsworthy and those that happened just recently. Remember, your goal is to keep your readers posted on new issues or events that are going on around them. If you’re just starting out, you’ll most likely to be asked by your editors to cover police beats otherwise, you’ll be asked to write about the economy, politics, sports or news from across the globe. Go with stories that are controversial so you can easily capture the attention of your target audience.

3. Inverted pyramid technique. There is no way that you can save the best information for last when writing news articles. You see, people usually read just the first part of your copies so it’s important that you give them the juiciest details on your first paragraph. This will also make the job of editors a lot easier as they can just easily delete your last paragraph if in case they need to save some space.
