Is it common for people to have degrees in both Mechanical & Computer Engineering?

After earning a degree in Business Management last May, I made the decision to go into Computer Engineering in order to develop technical skills and eventually move into a career in MIS. I’ve been in my school’s program for a year now. I like the courses as well as the overall subject matter(a big fear going in was that I would find it boring)but recently I started thinking about taking a few mechanical engineering classes to learn more about machine design and how computer systems are used to augment certain machines(like automobiles, robots, etc.). That’s when I started to wonder if there are people out there with degrees in both disciplines. If so, what may their particular jobs involve?

Mechanical engg and Computer engg require very different modes of thought. Most concepts in computer science are abstract – when you apply these abstract concepts to solve a particular problem, you are getting into computer engineering. Generally, there is no one accepted definition for ‘Computer Engineering’, but there is for Mechanical engg and Computer Science. In any case, mechanical engineering is a lot more visual and mathematical than computer science – which is mostly logic with a mathematical foundation. If you are going on to MIS, you will not really care about the mathematical foundations of logic – just common sense is good enough.
My personal opinion is that the more varied your spectrum of knowledge, the better you are as a human being. So, if it doesn’t break your bank or your class schedule, take an easy course in Mech Engg to test the waters.

FYI, a very intensive field that directly merges computer science and mechanical engineering is Finite Element Analysis. It has huge applications in the defence industry, aviation, and space research. This is hard core engineering though, and given your background and your plans, it doesn’t sound fitting.
