The automobile gear ratios in European cars is dramatically different from US cars. Why is that?

I recently rented a Mercedes B class car that AVERAGED 33 miles per gallon. All European cars accellerate more slowly due to gear ratios and engine sizes.

So let me see. you rented ONE european car and from that you calculated that all European cars accelerate slower MMMmmmm interesting. I am european and I can tell you that cars over in Europe arent any slower than American cars, without counting obviously on Ferrari, lambourghini Porsche. My last car in Europe was a Peugeot 205 1.9 Gti 16 valve and was way faster at accelerating than the car I have now and that has a V6 3.3 litre.
