The “Super” was the Hydrogen or Fusion bomb. Edward Teller is often cited as the “father of the hydrogen bomb” although other scientists such as Stanislaw Ulam made key contributions to its development.
The “George” test of the “Greenhouse” series of nuclear tests in the Pacific fused a small amount of deuterium in a test of the basic principle in 1951. The first full-scale test was the “Mike” test of the “Ivy” series of tests, which occured on November 1, 1952. It yielded the equivalent of approximately 10 million tons of TNT (10.4 Megatons) and vaporized the islet of Eugelab in the Eniwetok Atoll in the Pacific. Mike was not a very practical weapon as it used liquid deuterium, which had to be kept at a very low temperature requiring cryogenic equipment.
The first test of a “dry” fusion weapon was the “Bravo” shot of the “Castle” series carried out by the United States at Bikini Atoll on 1 March 1954. It proved to be more powerful than anticipated and remains the most powerful nuclear test ever carried out by the United States at approximately 15 Megatons (though not the most powerful ever which was a Soviet test of around 58 Megatons in 1961 at Novaya Zemla).
For the answers to your other questions, I would suggest that you check out the book “The Fifties” by David Halberstam. For more information on the “Super” you might want to look into the book “Dark Sun” by Richard Rhodes, which I believe was the book used as the basis for the American Experience program referenced in the link.
